Jakarta. Soap actress Vanessa Angel and her husband Febri Andriansyah died on Thursday after their SUV smashed a high-speed barrier on a toll road in East Java, with police suspecting reckless driving and a limit violation of speed.

The couple’s toddler son, the driver and a babysitter survived the crash.

Police said the crash happened on the Jombang toll road around 12:36 p.m. The left side of the Mitsubishi Pajero struck a concrete barrier at kilometer 673, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

The accident heavily destroyed the left side of the Pajero and threw it 30 meters from the impact. The car made a 180 degree turn before coming to a complete stop.

“Based on the condition of the vehicle at the scene, it may have traveled more than 100 kilometers per hour,” said East Java Police Traffic Director Comr. Latif Usman said.

Vanessa, real name Vanesza Adzania, was thrown out of the vehicle and Latif claimed she was not wearing a seat belt in the second row. Febri, 31, was killed in the wreckage of the car in the front passenger seat.

Their son, Gala Sky Andriansyah, was miraculously conscious and taken to a nearby hospital with the babysitter and the driver. The hospital confirmed that the boy and the driver suffered only minor injuries, but the babysitter identified as Siska Lorensa was in more serious condition.

At the time of the crash, the traffic was calm and the weather conditions were good, traffic officer Dwi Sumrahadi said, adding that the driver’s drowsiness could be the main factor contributing to the fatal crash.

A preliminary investigation found no signs of braking at the scene, further indicating a driver error. The identity of the driver has not yet been revealed.

Vanessa, 27, appeared in at least nine soap operas and three films between 2008 and 2018, mostly in a supporting role.

Several hours before the fatal crash, she posted an Instagram video from inside the car and wrote, “Can anyone guess where I’m going?

Images apparently shot with her cell phone camera also showed her son and the babysitter in the second row.

A lawyer for the couple said they would be buried in Jakarta on Friday.

The actress has received bad publicity in recent years. In January 2019, Vanessa was arrested in a hotel room in Surabaya, the capital of East Java, and charged with prostitution.

The Surabaya District Court found her guilty of illegally distributing pornographic content under the draconian Electronic Information and Transaction Act (ITE) and sentenced her to five months in prison.

At the end of last year, she was sentenced to three months in prison for drug-related offenses, but was released after just one month to continue her sentence under house arrest.
