Adoptium from the Eclipse Foundation publishes the first versions of JDK Temurin
The Adoptium working group released the first Eclipse Temurin Java SE binaries. Adoptium will provide Temurin binaries every six months as well as maintenance / security updates every three months. Long Term Support (LTS) versions are produced for at least four years.
Temurin versions are TCK certified and available for various architectures and support Linux, Windows, macOS and AIX operating systems. Docker images are available through the Docker Hub. The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is only available for Java 8 and 11 and it is recommended to use Jlink to create custom optimized runtime environments.
Formerly known as AdoptOpenJDK, the independent organization changed its name to Eclipse Adoptium after joining the Eclipse Foundation in June 2020. The Adoptium Working Group was officially created nine months later. The current AdoptOpenJDK website and API are still available, although it is advisable to use the new website and Adoptium API which are directly equivalent to the AdoptOpenJDK API to allow for a smooth transition.
The founding organizations of the Adoptium working group include Alibaba Cloud, Huawei, IBM, iJUG, Karakun AG, Microsoft, New Relic and Red Hat. Two representatives from each organization make up the Adoptium steering committee.
The transition to Adoptium included splitting AdoptOpenJDK into several sub-projects as part of the Adoptium top-level project:
Runtime environments are tested with the Eclipse AQAvit test suite and certified through Oracle’s Java SE TCK, which is licensed to the Eclipse Foundation, to determine compatibility with the Java specification. Under the TCK agreement, Adoptium is not authorized to publish runtime environments based on OpenJ9 or GraalVM. IBM now distributes OpenJ9 runtimes under the new name, Semeru.
For now, the AdoptOpenJDK API serves both Temurin and Semeru builds when asked for hotspot or openj9 builds, respectively. Archived versions of AdoptOpenJDK will not migrate to Adoptium because only AQAvit and JCK tested versions are supported.
