EDWARDSVILLE — Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Fuller Dome will host “Bucky in Bali” at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 13.
Buckminster Fuller was known to have traveled the world in his 87 years, but the Indonesian island of Bali held a special place for him. He fell in love with the culture of the islanders and became one of the leading collectors of Balinese artwork known as the “Young Artist Movement”. His collection of Balinese paintings from the “Young Artist Movement” grew so large that he ran out of wall space to hang the paintings and the collection spent decades in storage.
In 2020, his daughter, Allegra Fuller Snyder, donated the collection to the Center for Spirituality and Sustainability for display at the Fuller Dome Gallery.
“Bucky’s collection of Balinese art and his exceptional appreciation of Balinese cultural history grew out of his speculation that the ancient peoples of the Indonesian islands were the original peoples of the planet,” said center director Benjamin Lowder. .
The May 13 event includes samples of Balinese and Indonesian devours accompanied by a curator’s speech revealing the connection between this art collection and Fuller’s legacy as well as the evolution of the Balinese “young artist movement.” SIUE professor of anthropology, Cory Willmott, PhD, will share his thoughts on the painting.
Tickets are $20 for the curator’s talk and Balinese cuisine sampling; visit https://www.fullerdome.org/.
