Foot-and-mouth disease vaccination coverage exceeds 80% in East Java
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Foot-and-mouth disease (FA) under the first phase of the cattle vaccination program in East Java broke through the 80% mark.
“It is thanks to the hard work of all elements that the vaccination success for the first phase is quite high,” Acting East Java Governor Emil Elestianto Dardak said on Saturday.
Based on data from the East Java Integrated Foot-and-Mouth Disease Treatment Command Post, as of 8 July 2022, 295,831 of the total 363,400 vaccine doses, or approximately 81% of the doses allocated to the province, have been administered. .
The data shows that some areas of the province have achieved 100% coverage, while others have yet to achieve 60% coverage.
Dardak called on regions that have not started vaccinations to quickly start administering them to protect animals from the disease.
He urged farmers not to hesitate to have their livestock vaccinated as it can protect them against foot-and-mouth disease.
“Farmers should not hesitate to report if their cattle show symptoms of foot-and-mouth disease,” he added.
The acting governor said the first phase of the vaccination mainly targets dairy cows because they are at risk and the spread of infection among dairy cows could have a significant economic impact.
“The number of dairy cows in East Java is expected to reach 350,000 head. Therefore, for the first phase, vaccination is focused on dairy cows and then beef cattle,” he said.
The government of East Java has recruited officers from the Indonesian army (TNI) and national police (Polri) as vaccinators for the program to accelerate the treatment of foot-and-mouth disease, which has so far spread to 38 counties and cities in the province.
According to data provided by the command post, as of July 8, 2022, the number of infected cattle in East Java stood at 145,094.
Of the total number, 33,555 heads (23.13%) recovered, 845 heads (0.58%) died and 1,035 heads (0.71%) were conditionally culled.
