Moderate magnitude earthquake 4.4 to 34 km north of Sumbawa Besar, Indonesia
4.4 earthquake July 16 13:26 (GMT +8)
According to preliminary data, the earthquake was located at a shallow depth of 26 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deep ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) which also listed the earthquake at a magnitude of 4.4.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage, but was likely felt by many as a slight vibration in the epicenter area.
Weak tremors could have been felt in Pototano (5,000 inhabitants) located 28 km from the epicenter and in Sumbawa Besar (52,700 inhabitants) at 34 km.
Other towns close to the epicenter where the earthquake could have been felt as very weak tremors include Labuan Lombok (10,000 inhabitants) located 85 km from the epicenter and Labuan Lombok (10,000 inhabitants) 85 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant earthquake news becomes available.
