Magnitude 4.7 earthquake strikes near Matalam, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

A shallow 4.7 magnitude earthquake was reported after midnight near Matalam, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.
According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the earthquake struck on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at 12:12 a.m. local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deep ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage, but was likely felt by many as a slight vibration in the epicenter area.
Weak tremors could be felt in Labuan Lombok (10,000 inhabitants) located 35 km from the epicenter, Labuan Lombok (10,000 inhabitants) at 35 km, Sumbawa Besar (52,700 inhabitants) at 62 km, Pototano (5,000 inhabitants) 65 km and Praya (35,200 inhabitants) 83 km.
Other towns close to the epicenter where the earthquake could have been felt as very weak tremors include Gili Air (1,800 inhabitants) located 90 km from the epicenter, Matalam (318,700 inhabitants) 92 km away and Senggigi ( 5,000 inhabitants) at 97 km.
