Minister of Agriculture: foot-and-mouth disease has spread to 15 provinces
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo said foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in cattle has spread to 15 provinces. In detail, 3,910,310 head of cattle were infected with a mortality rate of 0.36%.
“As of May 17, 2022, foot-and-mouth disease has been detected in 15 provinces and 52 regencies/cities. Out of the total herd of 13.8 million, the number of people affected is 3.9 million,” Syahrul said during a hearing before Committee IV of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Monday. May 23, 2022.
The provinces affected are Aceh (47,802 head of cattle), Bangka Belitung (10,347), Banten (678), Yogyakarta (55,490), West Java (165,319), Central Java (689,319), East Java (1,941 131), West Kalimantan (14,186), South Kalimantan (71,831), Central Kalimantan (26,993), Lampung (24,175), West Nusa Tenggara (363,770), West Sumatra (151,660), South Sumatra (1,281 ) and North Sumatra (346,179).
Of the total affected, 2,630 or 18.83% recovered and 99 or 0.71% died.
Foot-and-mouth disease attacks cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep and pigs. Transmission is fairly rapid by direct or air contact.
However, Syahrul said that it is not contagious to humans and that infected cattle meat is still safe for consumption if slaughtered in a certain way, while infected organs should be destroyed in accordance with the protocol.
A large-scale transmission of foot-and-mouth disease will certainly have an impact on economic losses due to reduced productivity, deaths and low selling prices. It also potentially affects international trade due to export bans.
