Moto2 heads to Indonesia for the first Grand Prix in 25 years this week and Elf Marc VDS’ Sam Lowes has some early information ahead of its debut.
As WorldSBK wrapped up its 2021 season at the Mandalika International Street Circuit last November, Lowes called on his twin brother and Kawasaki Superbike rider Alex, for the interior on the 4.3km Lombok layout.
Fresh from his top-tier start to the season and his podium finish in Qatar, the 31-year-old is eager to get back to action for the second round in front of openly passionate home fans, but is aware of his situation.
The ongoing tendinitis problem still plagues the Briton and despite round-the-clock treatment on his left wrist, Lowes is not as far off his recovery as he would have hoped ahead of Sunday’s 25-lap race.
“I’m really excited to arrive in Indonesia and have the chance to ride on a new circuit,” Lowes said ahead of the Lombok weekend. “I spoke to my brother for advice on the track and what it looks like and he said it was really nice and fun to ride.
“I have been to Indonesia for sponsor events earlier in my Moto2 career and the great passion the fans have for the sport is amazing. gives a lot of motivation to go out there and put on a good show.
“I feel positive because the first round was a real bonus considering how difficult it was with my left wrist issue. I’ve had a lot of treatment, but the recovery isn’t where I want it to be.
“The feeling is not as good as I expected, but Qatar has shown that I can still be competitive, and the objective will be to score more important points for the championship while I work hard to regain full form.”
