PLN secures Java-Bali power grid after 6.6M earthquake

All customers can report through the PLN Mobile app or contact the PLN Contact Center on 123 if they experience electrical disturbances.
Serang, Banten (ANTARA) – The public electricity supplier PT PLN (Persero) ensured the security of the electricity network of the islands Java, Madura and Bali after a magnitude 6.6 (M) earthquake hit the Sumur sub-district, Banten province, on Friday afternoon.
The company’s executive vice president of corporate communications and corporate social responsibility Agung Murdifi said the company immediately dispatched teams to ensure that all power infrastructure, especially in the province of Banten, may continue to operate.
“According to reports from our teams, the electricity supply of Java, Madura, Bali Islands is not affected,” he noted in a statement on Friday.
Furthermore, he called on the public to remain calm.
“All customers can report through the PLN Mobile app or contact the PLN Contact Center on 123 if they experience electrical disturbances,” the executive vice president added.
Currently, the Java-Madura-Bali grid is capable of supplying 24.5 gigawatts (GW) of electricity, he noted.
Meanwhile, Chief of Bayah Timur village, Bayah sub-district, Lebak district, Banten province, Rafik Rahmatv Taufik said his camp had not received any reports of damage caused by the disaster in the coastal village.
“We felt a strong shaking for about 30 seconds when the first earthquake hit. Several aftershocks occurred over the next hour, although the shaking was relatively weak,” he said.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) informed that the epicenter of the earthquake was located about 52 kilometers (km) southwest of Sumur sub-district, Pandeglang district, province of Banten, at a depth of 10 km.

The earthquake, which occurred at 4:05 p.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB), had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
According to the agency, the disaster was caused by subduction activity due to a thrust fault.
The tremors were also felt by Jakarta residents at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) III-IV.
The tremors of the MMI III are usually felt by people inside, which is akin to that of a passing truck. Meanwhile, shaking from the MMI IV can cause creaking in windows, doors, and walls.
