A Spanish national and longtime Bali resident faces life imprisonment after police discovered the man was growing weed in his house in north Kuta.

The suspect, identified by his initials GAS, was arrested late last month, Badung Police Chief Leo Dedy Defretes told a press conference yesterday. He said GAS had lived in Bali for around 20 years as an entrepreneur, although authorities are now looking into his past activities while living on the island.

“The existence of this factory, it is worth suspecting that there is a network that we should be looking at, who else might be involved with the suspect,” Leo said.

According to the police, GAS had obtained its marijuana seeds in the Netherlands and was growing them using a hydroponic method. Based on the evidence they seized, GAS is suspected of having used it for personal consumption, although police are investigating other possibilities.

Police seized around 19 weed plants from Cannabis sativa variant, as well as about 17 weed pills, upon arrest.

GAS has since been charged with articles under Indonesia’s Narcotics Law, which provides for a maximum sentence of life in prison.
