West Sumatra Airport reopens Padang-Kuala Lumpur route today
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Minangkabau International Airport in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra, officially reopened the Padang-Kuala Lumpur international route on Saturday, October 1. The route had been interrupted for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Al-Hamdulillah today, coinciding with the 77th anniversary of West Sumatra province, Air Asia’s first flight on the Padang-Kuala Lumpur route officially commenced operation,” the international airport’s executive general manager said on Saturday. from Minangkabau, Siswanto, to Padang Pariaman.
On the first international flight, 135 passengers arrived from Malaysia and 105 people departed from Padang to Kuala Lumpur.
Currently, there is only one airline serving the route. Siswanto hopes other airlines will follow in the future. “Previously, there were several international flights to Padang, such as the Padang-Singapore route and direct Umrah flights from Padang to Jeddah,” he said.
Meanwhile, Region VI Airport Authority Chief Endah Purnama Sari welcomed the reopening of the international route. “This is the best time after Covid-19 [cases] decreases, I hope other airlines will open international flights,” she said.
West Sumatra Tourism Officer Luhur Budianda supported Endah’s view, saying it was the best gift for West Sumatra which is celebrating its 77th anniversary. “Finally, Minangkabau International Airport has been reopened as a gateway for international arrivals,” he said.
He hopes that international travelers, especially from Malaysia, will return to West Sumatra, so that the popular economy in the tourism sector will increase.
Luhur thanked all parties involved in reopening the air route. “It’s a fascinating synergy for us, as all parties are working together and making maximum efforts to reopen the entry point,” he remarked.
He said West Sumatra destinations are ready to welcome visitors and are preparing tourism programs for 2023 through Visit Beautiful West Sumatra 2023.
Air Asia officially operates Padang-Kuala Lumpur flights twice a week every Tuesday and Saturday.
Based on the websites of ticket providers on Saturday, the ticket price has been set starting at Rp 850,000 per person with a flight duration of 1 hour and 10 minutes.
